After a tragic accident kills his father and devastates his family, the talented William Scott is sent to art school on scholarship to train as a painter. Arriving at the Royal Academy in London, Scott becomes friends with the poet Dylan Thomas and soon falls in love with the young sculptor, Mary Lucas. Following school, Scott and Lucas marry in 1937, traveling to Italy and France, where they eventually stay and establish a school of painting in Brittany, despite the rumors of the conflict to come. Britain then declares war against Germany and the two young artists flee from France back to England where life was stark. Every night bombs were dropped as the young people played cards in underground shelters. Faced with the threat of German invasion, the young couple sends their newborn baby to live with family in America. Surviving the war, the young couple returns to begin their life again in Brittany only to find many of their friends have died or been executed. A deep resentment remains in the small town as both resistance fighters and collaborators begin to resolve their differences and find trust again.
