Hung On You (1967-8)
This 30second cinema commercial (1967-8) was directed by James Scott, photographed by Adam Barker Mill and edited by Barney Platts-Mills. It was screened in local London theatres. Commissioned by the new Chelsea boutique Hung On You, and founded by Michael Rainey, then emerging as a top fashion designer, the shop became a gathering place for artists, musicians, fashion innovators, and London's elite. With its flowery, boldcoloured shirts and kipper ties, the brand helped define a distinctly British vision of contemporary style. Among its clientele were members of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.
Rather than relying on the conventions of commercial advertising, this short film conveys effortless confidence and romantic sensibility, pointing toward a more subtle and aspirational tone that would later become the norm in high fashion marketing.
